Setup
You are supplied with a gimmicked Half Dollar, a centavo, and a bang ring. You will need a regular quarter. Place the gimmicked Half Dollar with the head side up inside the bang ring. The coin should sit inside the ring on the rim. Hold the bang ring between your thumb and middle finger, rim side up. Place your index finger on top of the coin to hold it in place. Hit the bottom of the ring against a hard surface a few times. This will cause an insert to separate from the Half Dollar. You will now have two pieces, a shell Half Dollar and a special insert with a Half Dollar on one side and a centavo on the other side. Place the regular centavo in your pocket, and a quarter under the gimmicked Half Dollar shell so it fits into the recess of the coin. Hold the Half Dollar with the quarter underneath it on the fingertips of your left hand. Now, take the insert with one half centavo and the other half a Half Dollar, and place the centavo side up on the fingertips of your right hand. To the audience it will look like you are holding a Half Dollar in your left hand and a centavo in your right hand.

Considerations

  1. Be sure to squeeze the gimmicked shell/insert before handing it to a spectator for examination. This will ensure a tight fit and prevent them from discovering the secret.
  2. If your coins fit too tightly do not be concerned. It may take several separations of your gimmicked coin to get it to break in.
  3. If your coins fit too loose and the insert falls out, it is easy to tighten them. Place the half dollar shell in the bang ring upside down with the cavity facing upward.  Very slowly apply pressure to the center of the shell with your thumb.  This will bend the shell slightly concave, and tighten the coins slightly.  Do this a little at a time until you are satisfied with the fit.
  4. Most of the effects are accomplished by secretly nesting the half dollar shell and insert together, causing the centavo to apparently vanish. The duplicate centavo can then be revealed in a variety of ways to create many different effects.

Performance
Show the two coins to your spectator, and place the Half Dollar with the quarter underneath it on top of the centavo. Note: Be careful not to flash the quarter underneath. Ask your spectator which coin appears larger, the Half Dollar or the centavo? The spectator will say that the Half Dollar is slightly larger. Now, carefully separate the two coins holding one in each hand. Tell your spectator they were correct, the Half Dollar is larger. Next, take the centavo side that is showing and slide it under the Half Dollar and above the Quarter, sandwiching the centavo to fit inside the shell of the Half Dollar. Gently squeeze the coins. You are holding the Half Dollar and the quarter together as one.

Tell your spectator to hold out his or her hand. Place both coins, with the Quarter hidden from view, into their hand. Have them make a fist and place both hands behind their back. Show your hands empty. Tell your spectator to separate the two coins behind their back, placing the Half Dollar in one hand and the centavo in the other hand (actually it is the quarter, but they will think it’s the centavo). Have them bring both fists forward. Tell the spectator you bet that you can remove one of the coins without touching their hands. Of course they can feel both coins, and will say, “No way!” Have them open their hands and see the shock on their face when they notice the Half Dollar in one hand and a Quarter in the other hand. The centavo is GONE! Reach into your pocket and remove the real centavo and say, “I won! I removed the centavo from your hands without touching them!”

Here are some other tricks/variations you can do with your Scotch and Soda

Vanish the Centavo – Put the gaffed centavo on the spectator’s palm.  Put the half dollar over this coin, but don’t allow them to close together.  Slide the coins together as your spectator closes their hand tightly over the coins, forcing them together.  Snap your fingers and have the spectator open their hand.  The centavo has vanished!

Coin Vanish with Silk – Put the gaffed centavo on the silk.  Place the half dollar over this coin, but don’t allow them to close together.  Draw the four corners together and hand the silk to the spectator.  Rub the coins together from the outside of the handkerchief locking them together.  Allow the spectator to open the hanky revealing the centavo has vanished!

Drinking Glass Vanish – Place the coins on the table slightly overlapping.  Cover the coins with a glass.  Slowly shake the glass back and forth allowing the coins to nest.  Tap the coins with the glass locking them together.  Pick up the half dollar revealing the centavo has vanished!

Playing Card Vanish – Place the coins on the table slightly overlapping.  Cover the coins with a playing card.  As you do, slide the coins together allowing the coins to nest.  Push the center of the card locking them together.  Snap your fingers and pick up the card to reveal that the centavo has vanished!

Coin Through Table – Place the gaffed centavo and the half dollar shell overlapping it on the table.  Your left hand secretly holds the duplicate centavo under the table.  Place your right-hand palm down on top of the two coins and rub them against the table, locking them together.  Tap the duplicate coin against the bottom of the table, then lift your right hand revealing the centavo is gone.  Your left hand brings the centavo out from under the table!

Coin Through Silk – Place the duplicate centavo in your right hand.  Place a silk on top of your hand concealing the duplicate coin.  In the center of the silk, place the gaffed centavo and the half dollar shell.  Close your hand over the coins locking them together.  Open your hand and allow the spectator to pick up the half dollar.  Slowly slide the silk away revealing the centavo in your hand.

Sealed Envelope Penetration – Seal the duplicate centavo in an envelope.  Place the envelope on the table and put the half dollar and insert on top of the envelope.  Have the spectator choose copper or silver.  If he says copper, tell him the copper goes.  If he says silver, tell him the silver stays.  Shake the coins and vanish the copper coin.  Have the spectator open the sealed envelope revealing the centavo inside!

The Amazing Quarter Trick

EFFECT:  The half dollar and gaffed centavo are placed into the spectator’s hand.  The spectator puts his hands behind his back and places one coin in each hand.  The spectator is asked to open the hand containing the half dollar.  The magician then bets the spectator he can remove the Mexican centavo from the hand using magic.  When the spectator opens his hand, it contains a quarter!

TO PERFORM:  Start by hiding a US quarter in the recess of the shell and place the insert, copper side up, on top of the shell.  The real centavo is in your right pocket.

Show both coins to the spectator by holding them between your thumb and index finger, one coin in each hand.  Tell the spectator you have a half dollar and a Mexican centavo.  The half dollar is silver, the centavo is copper.  Display the coins while you speak.  Tell the spectator to place his hand palm up.  Lift up on the shell with the edge of the centavo, sliding the insert in between the shell and the quarter.  Squeeze the insert into the half dollar leaving the quarter beneath it.  Be sure they do not see the quarter beneath the half dollar coin.  Have the spectator place their hands behind their back.  Instruct them to place on coin in each hand.  Then bring their hands to the front while completely closed.  Ask if they know which hand contains the half dollar.  Have him open that hand only.  Then tell them that you will remove the Mexican centavo from their fist without them knowing it.  They will feel the quarter and believe they still hold the centavo.   Snap your fingers and reach into your pocket removing the duplicate centavo coin.  Have the spectator open their hand revealing the quarter!

Coins Across

EFFECT:  In this effect, you will create the illusion of a coin traveling from one hand to another.

TO PERFORM:  Start by classic palming the duplicate centavo in your right hand.  Display the half dollar and shell in your left hand and place them on the table overlapping them slightly.  Cover the coins with your left hand and place your right hand a couple of feet away palm down.  Rub the coins with your left hand allowing them to nest, at the same time, release the duplicate coin from your right palm.  Slowly remove your hands showing the centavo has traveled from one hand to the other.

Coin Finds a Selected Card

EFFECT:  The spectator selects a card and replaces it back in the deck.  A half dollar and Mexican centavo are placed on top of the deck and covered with a shot glass.  The centavo magically vanishes from the glass only to reappear in the deck of cards right above the selected card!

TO PERFORM:  This is an incredible effect using a deck of cards with your coin set.  Start by holding the duplicate centavo underneath a packet of cards in your left hand.  The coin should be held between your left fingertips and the card pack.  Slowly spread the cards between your hands allowing a spectator to select a card.  As the spectator looks at his card, you will separate the deck into two halves with one half in each hand.  The card is replaced on the right-hand packet and the left packet with the duplicate centavo is placed on top of the selected card.  You now bring out the half dollar shell and copper insert and place them on top of the deck overlapping each other.  Cover the coins with your hand and nest them together.  Show the centavo is gone.  Cut the cards to the duplicate centavo and turn over the card underneath it, revealing the selection!

Traveling Coin

EFFECT:  A coin travels from beneath a playing card to another card under the spectator’s hand.

To PERFORM:  Start with the duplicate centavo held under a deck of cards in your left hand.  Deal a playing card onto the table but as you do, pull the duplicate centavo from under the deck placing it on the table beneath the card.  Have a spectator place his hand on top of the card.  Place the half dollar shell overlapping the centavo insert on top of the table.  Cover them with another card.  Rub the card on top of the shell and insert nesting them together.  Lift the card showing the centavo is gone.  Have the spectator lift his hand and card revealing the centavo has traveled!
